![]() ![]() At idle it shows about 7 or8 degrees before top dead center. I have the timing set at 28 degrees with the motor revel up a bit. I realize this is with the correct carb and distributor which I don't have. According to vw manual timing should be 5 degrees after top dead center. Don't recall what the static advance worked out to though. It's not the best way but I used to set my 009 at 30° total with a non-advanced timing light and it worked fine although I didn't know any better as a teenager. I'd get a timing light with an advance so you can be sure though. If performance feels right and you're static timing it at 5° BTDC, your timing is probably in the zone and fine for an 009 but you could be leaving some power on the table. The dipstick is pretty hot at those temps. Even if where I'm measuring and the thermometer are reading low, it's still in the safe range. After driving around town in 80☏ weather, my oil reads ~168° and head temp ~275°. Easy way is to measure oil temp at the drain plug and find a spot underneath to measure head temp. Harbor freight has one for around $20USD. If you're concerned about overheating, you can get one of those cheap infrared thermometers with a laser that are reasonably accurate.
